How should a VEGETARIAN approach being invited to a Barbecue?

I'm a vegetarian and I do not eat any meat or fish. So if a co-worker invites me to a barbecue how should I approach it? Should I say no thanks im a vegetarian? yet its not necessarily just about food, its a social event. so How do I decline or politely let them know that I do not eat meat?
