Does education really need to be compulsory(required for everyone)?

Education was first mandated by the Romans, the whole point was suppress poverty and crime, general suffering. Requiring education up to high school is crucial in that way, because if we were let loose with little or no knowledge, we'd digress as a species, I'm pretty sure.
