Do you think the Puritans were frightening?

Socially it certainly would seem that way, from the witch hunts to the extremist religious rules. They could be very nice people though, much like John Proctor from The Crucible (an Arthur Miller play about the Salem witch trials), but i guess you could always see them as a Roger Chillingworth from The Scarlet Letter...
